Background:
Founded in 1890, this 'happy' school moved to its present building in 1973, on a 'beautiful' four-acre site overlooking the sea. Around one third of pupils travel to school by bus. Indoor facilities include three 'large' teaching areas, quiet rooms, a hall, library and resource area. The grounds comprise a football pitch, athletics and hockey area, adventure playground, and swimming pool for summer use. All children swim in summer, and older children use a local pool to swim throughout the year. Year 6 pupils learn to sail and canoe as part of the Deben River Project. The curriculum teaches pupils to be 'independent and self-confident', learning in whole classes, small groups or individually. Children with special needs are assessed and monitored regularly. Year 6 pupils visit France and learn some conversational French in advance. Extra-curricular activities include cricket, sailing, French, keyboard and brass tuition. The school has links with the 'lively' community, maintained by the 'very successful' Friends of Hollesley School group, which also raises money for school facilities.
