Background:
The original school was founded on land donated by the local church in 1835 and the current building was constructed in the 1960s. The school's extensive grounds have a wildlife area, a gazebo, a willow dome, a small pen and hutch for the rabbit and guinea pig, a hard area for netball and tennis and plenty of grass for other sports. The school is an integral part of the small rural village of Stutton, on the Shotley peninsular, and many community organisations use its facilities out of school hours. Group coaching is offered by a local tennis coach after-school. A football club is also run after school, and other clubs include cookery, a revision club for Year 6, and a newspaper club. The children stage a big drama production every two years, with music and script specially written. The school has developed a link with Balogu School in Ghana, in response to the On-the-line project and three teachers from Balogu have visited Stutton and participated in school life. Stutton Primary aims 'for all our pupils to develop lively and enquiring minds, and for them to be able to ask questions, argue rationally, and approach their work with confidence'.
