Background:
Opened in 1939 as two separate boys and girls secondary modern schools, Copleston High became comprehensive in 1997. It is situated on a 40-acre site to the north-east of Ipswich and serves a mixed residential area, almost entirely owner-occupied. The school is over-subscribed and receives three applications per place from out-of-area applicants. About 25 per cent of places are taken by pupils from outside the catchment area. The school has the 'usual range' of specialist accommodation including four 'well-equipped' computer bases. A #2.5 million extension for sixth-form accommodation was added in 1996. There is a 'large' sporting centre for community use and two successful lottery bids have provided a floodlit all-weather pitch for hockey and soccer and a floodlit mulit-play area. In 1997, the school received a Sports Council award for service to the community. It describes itself as 'caring, with a strong pastoral system and a focus on achievement'.
