Background:
Thurston Community College's school building won a design award when it was first built in 1984. The school has an auditorium with an adjacent music suite, a drama studio, and a new sixth-form community learning centre. The school has a teacher-training partnership with Cambridge University. Sports facilities include a sports barn, a gymnasium, a fitness centre, eight tennis courts, a climbing wall and playing fields. The school has more than 200 networked computers. There is an orchestra, a big band, a choir, a traditional jazz band and a swing band. The school arranges regular foreign exchanges and visits to United States, France, Germany and Denmark, and there are World Challenge expeditions to Venezuela, Mexico, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Pupils helped to build a school in Namibia through charity work.
